Fire Dancing (Nhay Lua) Festival
Pa Then ethnic group has over 5000 people, mainly living in Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang. These provinces remain many ancient festival and custom, including Nhay Lua (fire dancing) Festival which is special, mysterious and neglected.
Fire dancing festival is annually held after harvest. The festival’s ritual usually needs a sorcerer to worship the gods, and sacrifices are an iron herb, a chicken, a bowl of rice, 10 cups of wine and bamboo paper. A heap of fire of 4m to 5m width is set, and the ritual starts and lasts from 1 to 2 hours before the festival starts. Fire dancing festival is usually held during leisure after harvest time, from 16/10 of previous year to 15/1 of following year (Lunar calendar). In spiritual life, Pa Then people believe that they are always protected and supported by the gods from danger, misfortune. With respect to Pa Then people, Fire God is their supreme god bringing them luck. Therefore, all villagers acclaim and encourage together during the time of Fire dancing festival. There are 8 to 10 participants, mainly strong men of the village. Firstly, a sorcerer worships kitchen god and soil god for permission. The worship lasts 30 minutes, and then the ritual of Fire God is following. The festival is considered spiritual cultural activity proving extraordinary power of human against danger: dispel evil spirits, disease and celebrating harvest, worshiping the gods for good health and prosperity.
