Gau Tao Festival or called a festival of visiting mountain in Spring, is originated from a pray for child of each Mong ethnic group family. When their wish become true, they held the festival to show their gratitude towards the Earth, Gods….and invite other people to join together. The festival is usually held on the beginning days of New Year of H'Mong ethnic group.
In the festival a representing family is chosen to pray the earth and gods for a New Year of full luck. On festival days, the host family will prepare a mea, including a pig’s head, a wine bottle, 4 bowls, 4 small cups, a sheaf of rice, a sheaf of corn, a machete and a crossbow to express their gratitude to the gods. A sorcerer, then carries out rites to set up a bamboo tree known as "cay neu" which is made of plum body with several leaf canopies, hanged red silk tape, a bunch of dummy, wine bottle. The tree shows start of the festival. The sorcerer represents the host family to pry the sentences: today is a good day, on the beginning of Spring, thanks the earth, gods for good weather, abundant crop, good health…
After the rites, many traditional sport activities and games are held such as playing shuttlecock, pan pipe dancing, love duo singing, pipe singing, pole climbing, tug of war, cane pushing, crossbow shooting ... After these activities, the sorcerer and a respectful old man will hold a ceremony to lower the tree. The tree’s body will be used for bed plank, and the bunch of dummy will be tied in bed room for a wish of family happiness. The wine bottle is splashed in 4 directions for a wish of good year, crop, cattle growth ...
