Pac Rang, Phuc Sen Blacksmith Village
Phuc Sen village is in Phuc Sen commune, Quang Uyen District, Cao
Bang Province. It has long been known throughout the country for farm
equipment forging traditions, tied to the life of Nung people, and has
become a distinctive culture of this land.
Phuc Sen Commune has 10 villages with 400 households and more than 2,000
people, mostly ethnic Nung with typically indigo clothes. The main road
in the commune have been turned concrete, but their stilt houses and
their traditional ways of life is still intact.
Under floor is the space for forging and to store farming tools like
tractors, corn granary ... Upstairs separated by wood/bamboo floor, the
altar in the middle of the house, stove, guest receiving, bed room are
also in this floor ... There are many new houses built recently but
still keep the traditional style.
Forging in Phuc Sen has been practiced more than 1,000 years, generation
to generation. There are about 150 smithy family, spread in six
villages: Phia Chang tren, Phia Chang duoi, Dau Co, Pac Rang, Tinh Dong
and Lung Vai that formed famous black smith Phuc Sen village.
In Phuc Sen village all are just craft workers, mainly based on long
experience, from selecting raw materials for steel making their way to
apply know-how to create products such as knives, scissors, hoes,
sickles ... with good quality, be trusted by labor consumers.
